<p>The report specifically compares the general public&#8217;s (or at least the portion that uses Twitter) thoughts about Facebook privacy with the media sensationalism around the story. The firm studied tweets with references to privacy, along with other keywords like Facebook, Open Graph, Zuckerberg, and Google. </p>
<p>&quot;We are the last generation to know privacy as it was,&quot; says Brian Solis, Chief Data Analyst for PeopleBrowsr. &quot;As Facebook moves human connections and society into a more public spotlight, people and the press will push back. But this will move things forward collaboratively. Over time I believe the debate will evolve into a series of productive forums and memes that explore the risks of living in public and the rewards for participation.&quot;</p>

<p><strong>Some of PeopleBrowsr&#8217;s findings from the study: </strong></p>
<p><em>- Prior to the F8 conference on April 24, privacy tweets hovered between 1,000-3,000 references per day, then spiked to 9,000 on the day of F8</p>
<p>- On April 25 (day after the conference), privacy-related tweets fell to 3,500 &ndash; then surged to 7,500 when politicians joined the fray. Around May 25, privacy discussions hit the ceiling in this study with 20,000 unique discussions. </p>
<p>- In terms of context, Facebook dominated the landscape for mentions of #privacy</p>
<p>- Conversations followed media reports</em></p>
<p>&quot;We see that even on the day when privacy took center stage, the media sensationalized the topic. But the public, at least those on Twitter, did not flood the streets with 140 character picket signs. 9,000 tweets does not seem to account for the millions of Twitter users or the 500 million people who have Facebook accounts,&quot; says Solis. </p>
<p>That last statement is true on a couple of different levels. For Solis&#8217; purpose it does not appear to indicate that the majority of Facebook users were that concerned. However, it is also worth noting that the majority of Facebook users are not necessarily active Twitter users. Facebook has over 500 million people. It&#8217;s not a flawless argument, and the findings should be taken with a grain of salt like any such study. That said, Twitter is generally viewed as a good indication of public opinion, as trending topics often reflect pop culture and news at large. If there is something significant happening, you can generally find people talking about it on Twitter.</p>
<p>Besides, Facebook&#8217;s numbers continued to grow. Diaspora (the &quot;Facebook alternative&quot;)<a href="http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2010/08/27/so-called-facebook-alternative-diaspora-gets-a-launch-date"> will be here soon</a>. I&#8217;m willing to bet that will have little impact on Facebook&#8217;s growth as well. </p>

href="http://blog.twitter.com/2010/09/evolving-ecosystem.html" target="_blank">wrote</a> just now on the company blog that mobile usage of the site is up 62% since in just over four months, and 16% of all new Twitter users are starting out on mobile devices as opposed to web signups (this number is up from just 5% earlier this year).</p>
<p>In the days before Twitter started issuing official apps on a platform-by-platform basis, the company wasn&#8217;t seeing the kind of mobile adoption it had hoped for. Williams wrote, &#8220;Even though there was a plethora of third-party Twitter apps, people were having trouble finding and selecting one because none were called &#8216;Twitter.&#8217; This kept them from using Twitter at all.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company adopted a new strategy for mobile; rather than leaving all the mobile app development to third parties, Twitter decided to consolidate efforts. In the short term, this caused some consternation for third-party devs; however, looking at Twitter&#8217;s stats, it&#8217;s clear the company did the right thing for its shareholders and bottom line.</p>

href="http://mashable.com/2010/04/09/breaking-twitter-acquires-tweetie-iphone-app/">acquired Tweetie</a> in May this year; this was our first indication that Twitter would be creating and distributing its own mobile apps for a change. Tweetie was revamped and renamed <a<br />
href="http://mashable.com/2010/05/19/twitter-iphone-official/">Twitter for iPhone</a> in May. A <a<br />
href="http://mashable.com/2010/04/09/official-twitter-app-blackberry/">BlackBerry app</a> was released in April, and the company&#8217;s official <a<br />

<p>Twitter is also seeing strong growth in its mobile site and SMS service, and Williams notes that third-party apps such as <a<br />
href="http://mashable.com/tag/tweetdeck">TweetDeck</a> continue to be valuable and important parts of the Twitter mobile landscape.</p>
<p>And as for the long tail, Williams writes, &#8220;There are a tremendous number of other apps that people are using, not necessarily as their main Twitter client, but as an alternative way to create or view Tweets. The number of registered OAuth applications is now at almost 300,000 &#8212; this number has nearly tripled since <a<br />
href="http://mashable.com/tag/chrip">Chirp</a> [Twitter's developer conference, which was held in April in San Francisco].&#8221;</p>

href="http://mashable.com/category/facebook">Facebook</a> is bolstering the security of user accounts through the launch of a new feature that gives users the ability to see their overall account activity and remotely log out of active sessions.</p>
<p>Have you ever logged into your Facebook at a public computer, but forgot to log out when you left?  What if you left your Facebook account open at home with a snooping brother, sister or spouse?  They would have access to sensitive personal information or could wreak havoc by posing as you.</p>
<p>These are the problems that Facebook is attempting to address with the gradual rollout of remote logout.  The new feature appears under the &#8220;Account Security&#8221; section of Account Settings.  Account Security displays the most recent activity related to your account, including location, device name, time and device type/browser.  This should give you a clue as to whether you left Facebook open at a public computer or just left it running at the office PC.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not all, though.  To the right of any active account is a link for remotely logging out of your Facebook account.  &#8220;In the unlikely case that someone accesses your account without your permission, you can shut down the unauthorized login before resetting your password and taking other steps to secure your account and computer,&#8221; the Facebook team explained in <a<br />
href="http://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-security/forget-to-log-out-help-is-on-the-way/425136200765" target="_blank">blog post</a> published earlier today.</p>
<p>This is a welcome security update from the world&#8217;s largest social network.  For many, Facebook accounts hold information as sensitive as e-mail (and <a<br />
href="httP://mashable.com/tag/gmail">Gmail</a> has had <a<br />
href="http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/remote-sign-out-and-info-to-help-you.html" target="_blank">remote logout since 2008</a>).  Anything that provides more control over a user&#8217;s security is a win in our books.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google announced today that it is releasing a new stable version of Chrome, which the company says is even faster and more streamlined. In fact, Google claims it is three times faster on JavaScript performance than it was two year ago, when Chrome was first launched (it&#8217;s the two-year anniversary, by the way).</p>
<p>&quot;We&#8217;ve also been working on simplifying the &#8216;chrome&#8217; of Chrome,&quot; <a href="http://chrome.blogspot.com/2010/09/back-to-future-two-years-of-google.html">says</a> product manager Brian Rakowski. &quot;As you can see, we took the already minimalist user interface and stripped it down a bit more to make it easier to use. We combined Chrome&rsquo;s two menus into one, revisited the location of the buttons, cleaned up the treatment of the URL and the Omnibox, and adjusted the color scheme of the browser to be easier on the eyes.&quot;</p>
<p>&quot;As always, we&rsquo;re hard at work on making Chrome even faster, and working on ways to improve graphics performance in the browser through hardware acceleration,&quot; adds Rakowski. &quot;With the Chrome Web Store, we hope to make it much easier to find and use great applications on the web. We also ratcheted up the pace of our releases so that we can get new features and improvements to everyone more quickly.&quot;</p>

<p>A longtime fan of the Dead, David co-wrote the book with HubSpot co-founder and fellow deadhead, Brian Halligan to share the brilliant innovations the Dead brought to the business of marketing music and building an incredibly passionate community of brand enthusiasts.</p>
